Some years ago social networking was just for young children or teenagers, but now, it is extended for almost every one of all ages.
Having a profile where everyone in your list of friends can watch you at the same time can present some type of problems. Maybe most of us don’t act or say the same thing with all of our acquaintances, and maybe some of our messages are not for every one to be known.
Also, many tend to "collect" friends to have a list of thousands of people, but many of who he/she never met, just to show others their popularity. Is different when is a politician or celebrity since they are using it to have a fan club.
So it is very important to take some issues into account before having a social network and learn about the site’s settings and options to configure the access level and visibility of our information to the people in our list.
Here are some tips:
- Consider the different types of social networking that exist, some are geared toward general purpose like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter; and some are for more narrow purpose for professional field as LinkedIn or to find classmates friends like Classmate.com. This can protect you of unaware public comments and photos from other person to you that can damage your professional reputation for example.
- Be careful when updating your information or messages in a social network that are linked to other social network.
- Be aware of posting topics that can make people uncomfortable or comments that is confidential or sensitive.
- Avoid posting when you are under influence of alcohol, anger or sleepy, you will regret about it when in conscious.
- Be careful of posting all details about your life or intimate photos, those information can be used by an identity thief, hijacker or against you.
- Above tips can be applied too for pictures in a compromising position or offensive, this can damage your reputation.
- Control who are asking you to be part of your list.
- Don’t post things that can embarrass a person and don’t let other do it to you, called them the attention if necessary, but is better to choose your friends wisely.
